A Chinese tea shop is a specialty shop offering Chinese tea leaves and accessories to Chinese tea lovers. The teas offered in such shops are usually of a higher quality compared to tea served in typical Chinese restaurants.

Walking into a tea shop, you can see rows of teas, tea pots, and tea accessories. There will certainly be a table where the host brews tea for customers to sample.

Customers who know what they want will communicate these preferences to the sales person who will recommend various grades of tea leaves to the customer. The customer may do a visual check on the tea leaves or smell them to decide if he likes the quality and fragrance. A sampling of the tea usually follows this evaluation.

For customers who are new to Chinese tea, the sales person may offer small cups of different tea for the customer to try. The background and type of that tea and its health properties are also introduced.

6. Green Tea and Arthritis
Green tea can help prevent and reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

Green tea may have health benefits which include preventing arthritis. Study results reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicate that antioxidants found in green tea, known as polyphenols, may effectively reduce the incidence and severity of rheumatoid arthritis.

The lead author of the green tea study was Dr. Tariq Haqqi of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Haqqi and his team of researchers used mice to study the effect of polyphenols in rheumatoid arthritis, a disease characterized byinflammation, pain, swelling, and joint destruction.

How The Study Was Conducted

The mice in the study were given either plain water or water enriched with green tea. The dosages given were comparable to human consumption of four cups of green tea per day. All the mice were then injected with collagen for the purpose of inducing arthritis. Collagen-induced arthritis is considered very similar to human rheumatoid arthritis.

Study Results

The study results concluded that mice which were fed the green tea polyphenols were significantly less susceptible to developing collagen-induced arthritis than the mice not fed green tea polyphenols. For the mice fed green tea which did however develop arthritis, it occurred as late onset and mild. Only 8 out of 18 mice receiving green tea polyphenols developed arthritis, while 17 out of 18 mice not receiving green tea polyphenols developed arthritis.

Green Tea and Arthritis: Study Conclusion

Examination of joint tissue microscopically revealed marginal infiltration of joint cells in mice receiving the green tea in contrast with massive infiltration in the mice not fed green tea. The effect of the green tea appeared dramatic.

Point Of Interest

In many countries such as India, China, and Japan, green tea is regarded as healthful with the potential to prevent certain illnesses. Seemingly, rheumatoid arthritis in these countries exists at a much lower rate than elsewhere around the world and some people believe strongly in the effect of green tea.

5. Green tea and skin

Antioxidant in green tea protects the skin from the the harmful effects of free radicals, which cause wrinkling and skin aging.

Green tea also helps fight against skin cancer.

Recent scientific studies have indicated that green tea could protect against cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis, as well as aid in weight loss. And you can't walk into a cosmetics store these days without bumping into a skin care product containing green tea. Many believe the tea in skin products can help ward off skin cancer and signs of aging.

An article published in the August issue of the Archives of Dermatology says yes -- in theory.

"There may be some benefits of green tea in the human skin products," Hasan Mukhtar, PhD, and colleagues say in the article, which summarizes all the known information about green tea's effects on the skin. Mukhtar is a professor and the director of research in the department of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Still, Mukhtar says, it's not clear whether the amounts of green tea found in the skin products now available are enough to have any benefit. In other words, don't run out and stock up on green tea masks, creams, and bubble baths just yet.

Green tea is consumed mostly in Asian countries, including India, Japan, Korea, and China; it's not quite as popular as its cousin, black tea, which is consumed by more than 75% of tea drinkers. Like black tea and oolong tea, green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant -- but unlike the other two varieties, its leaves are not fermented before steaming and drying; they remain fresh.

Mukhtar believes, as do others, that green tea's antioxidant property is key to its skin-protective qualities. "Of all the antioxidants known to mankind, the components of green tea are the most potent," says Mukhtar. "Antioxidants are those agents which can counteract the effects of oxidant radicals." Oxidant radicals -- or free radicals, as they are commonly called -- are byproducts of the body that can cause damage to cells and tissues. Antioxidants bind to the free radicals, deactivating them before they can cause harm.
